About

Presented by Babirra Music Theatre

Vaudeville acts may be dying out in USA theatres in the1920s, but that doesn’t stop relentless and ambitious stage-mother Rose from dragging her young daughters Baby June and Louise across the country in search of stardom. With her favourite child outgrowing her precocious persona and their saccharine homegrown performances going out of style, Rose’s craving for success is soon threatened. Not only is burlesque becoming the hottest new act in town - but her daughters are about to begin seeking independence from their domineering mother.

Based on the real-life story of American burlesque superstar Gypsy Rose Lee, and with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, music by Jule Styne and book by Arthur Laurents, Gypsy, which first opened in May 1959, starring Ethel Merman as Rose, changed music theatre forever with its daring story, genre-breaking style, innovative structure, and complex compelling characters. The famous score includes “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”, “Some People, “Let Me Entertain You” and “Together Wherever We Go”. The dramatic challenges of portraying the wealth of unique and dynamic theatre-world characters, Herbie’s heartbreak, June and Tulsa’s emancipation, Louise’s evolution, or the show-stopping finale of “Rose’s Turn”, have made this a classic musical that has been referred to as the greatest American musical by numerous critics and writers.
