About

Presented by Kerala Hindu Society Melbourne Inc.

Keli, a presentation envisioned by the renowned Mohiniyattam exponent Dr. Methil Devika, is an artistic journey that reflects the cultural soul of Kerala. Rooted in the gentle, contemplative movements of Mohiniyattam, the work draws from the state’s rich reservoir of local legends, folk theatre traditions, and trance practices—offering audiences an evocative immersion into Kerala’s living heritage.

Dr. Methil Devika, hailed as one of India’s foremost practitioners of Mohiniyattam, belongs to the culturally vibrant village of Palakkad, Kerala. Both a performer of rare depth and an academic of repute, she has redefined the boundaries of classical dance through her innovative and research-driven approach. Her works, such as the dance anthology Sarpatatwam—which entered the race for the Oscars—bear testimony to her ability to situate a traditional form within a contemporary global dialogue.

Widely recognized at national, state, and international platforms, Dr. Devika has been honoured with several accolades, most recently the ‘Driver of Change’ Award from India Today. She has also been acknowledged by the Australian Government with Permanent Residency under the Global Talent Category, affirming her impact as a cultural ambassador of India.

Through Keli and her broader body of work, Dr. Methil Devika continues to embody the role of a visionary artist—bridging tradition and modernity, the local and the universal, in ways that resonate deeply with audiences around the world.
